Environmental Policy

Statement

Baseless Fabric is committed to reducing the environmental impact of our work and embedding sustainable practice across everything we do. As a company creating opera and theatre in public spaces, we aim to lead by example minimising our carbon footprint through conscious productions, recycling and reusing materials, and working with local suppliers wherever possible. We regularly review our activity through Theatre Green Book principles, commit to learning and research, and share this learning with the wider sector where possible to help inspire positive environmental change.

Our Impacts

We recognise that our work has environmental impacts, particularly in the following areas:

  • Travel: carbon emissions, travel routes, and transport choices for people and materials.
  • Rehearsal spaces: energy use, water use, waste reduction and recycling.
  • Production: sourcing of materials (local, sustainable, or pre-loved), waste reduction and recycling, repurposing of costumes, sets, and equipment.
  • Digital and communication materials: energy use for storage, downloading and streaming, and reduction of printed materials.
  • Office materials and equipment: sustainable procurement of stationery, IT, furniture, and cleaning supplies.
  • Business services: website hosting, banking, and suppliers aligned with sustainable practices.

Our Goals

  • Embed environmental awareness within our creative process and participation work, encouraging audiences and communities to explore sustainability through the arts.
  • Undertake further research around practical and achievable steps in reducing our Environmental Impact and making our work more sustainable.
  • When and as appropriate, share our learning and findings with the wider sector, contributing to industry standards such as the Theatre Green Book.
  • Strengthen our governance by recruiting environmental expertise to the Board and provide ongoing training for staff and freelancers.

Monitoring and Reporting

  • Ensure Environmental Impact is an ongoing agenda item at board meetings with the Artistic Director providing an annual report to the Board reviewing our environmental impact.
  • Implement models of good practice from the Theatre Green Book alongside our own findings from previous activity.
  • Review Arts Council England Investment Principles annually to ensure alignment with environmental goals.
